The Battle begins
One of Rosecrans corps commanders, Maj. Gen. George H. Thomas began to fight on September 19th. Maj. Gen. Thomas sent Brig. Gen. John M. Brannan’s division to what was expected to be a isolated Confederate brigade. Instead of finding a isolated brigade Brannan's division ran into Forrest's cavalry (commanded by Brig. Gen. States Rights Gist), at Jay's Mill. By mid-afternoon the federals had been pushed back almost to LaFayette-Chattanooga Road.
On the west side of LaFayette-Chattanooga Road the division of Brig. Gen. Horatio Van Cleve began to fight with Maj. Gen. Alexander P. Stewart (who was on the confederate side) at 2:30. Stewart's men suddenly attacked Cleve's division, disordering them and forcing them backwards. Although Stewart broke through the lines, his breakthrough was quickly halted with the aid of Maj. Gen. James Negley's and Brig. Gen. Joseph Jones Reynolds' divisions help (they were sent as reinforcements upon Thomas's command). With the three major generals combined powers they changed from column to line formation and attacked Stewart's forces from the south and the north at the same time. After that attack Stewart's forces were pushed by 100 yards east of the road.
Maj. Gen. John Bell Hood sent two brigades to slam into and overlap three brigades of Brig. Gen. Jefferson C. Davis. Quickly driving them westward. After Davis's division was driven westward another federal division under the orders of Brig. Gen. Thomas J. Wood came up from the south, turning Hood's flank. Soon after another division arrives, under Maj. Gen. Phillip Sheridan. Together the federals drove back Hood's men into the forest east of the road.
The fighting at Chickamauga was the most confusing and close-quarters battles of the war. Due to the thick woods and the constant shifting of troops.
The final outcome was that the Confederates won the Battle of Chickamauga.
In the end the confederates won the battle. Even though they won the battle of Chickamagua it is often reffered as the death-kennel for the confederate. Bragg won the battle with over 20% of
