Life Before Presidency:
Hiram Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27, 1822. He was the first of six children born to hard working parents Jesse and Hannah Grant. His father was a tanner which is a person who takes animal hides and converts it into leather, and that made a good living at the time. Hiram worked in the tannery with his father when he was a child and he hated it and said that when he grew up he never wanted to do it again. He was married to his wife Julia Boggs Dent(1826-1902). He had 4 children named Fredrick Dent Grant(1850-1912), Ulysses"Buck" Simpson Grant Jr(1852-1929), Ellen "Nellie" Wrenshall Grant(1855-1922), Jesse Root Grant(1858-1934). Ulysses was a small quite boy. Simple local schools bored him. Other children mistook his silence for stupidity and his nickname was "useless".His family did not have enough money to afford college but the united states military academy at west point offered him a free education, and in return they wanted him to be in the army services after graduating. His dad did not tell him that he had got the offer but applied anyway for him and Ulysses was accepted. Ulysses told his father that he did not want to go, but his father encouraged him enough to go and he did. He incorrectly wrote his name as Ulysses Simpson( which was his moms family name) instead of Ulysses grant on the application. He tried to fix it, but it was to late, so from that point on his name was Ulysses S. Grant. He was very good at math and drawing, but his prior education was limited, and that is what made him a unexceptional student.
